Artificial IntelligenceIt’s clear that today’s technology has greatly improved since its earliest creations. However, most people still don’t realize just how far we’ve come. For example, the terms Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Automation, are becoming more well known, but their concepts are still a blur to most of society.

So what are artificial intelligence and automation all about? While these two terms are often used interchangeably, there are some major differences between the two.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial Intelligence is described as being a science that involves engineering to make intelligent machines or software that mimics human behavior and intelligence. This means that computers and machines have the ability to think and learn just as humans do. The main goal of AI is to create an establishment where humans and computers work together to reach a desired goal.

In order for AI to be successful, it requires three necessary components: cognitive computing, Internet of Things, and a strong technology infrastructure.

AI Components

Cognitive computing is using a combination of data mining, pattern recognition, and natural language processing which allows computers to use neural networks which mimic human brain function. The neural network is inspired by biological neural networks, but the ones used in AI are able to process information by responding to external inputs.

The Internet of Things (IoT) allows data to be sent and received through connected devices. Using this technology along with artificial intelligence will let us analyze even more data that is being transmitted, which in turn will help improve organizations in various aspects.

Lastly, you need a strong technology infrastructure. Data is key when it comes to AI because it requires an immense amount of data in order to be powered properly. You’ll also have to understand how the data is collected, analyzed, developed, and executed.

Machine Learning

Machine learning (ML) is a form of AI which uses algorithms to recognize patterns that are stored in data and use those to predict developments. The software that ML is based on, like AI, is created to mimic or imitate human behavior and thinking. Similar to how humans extract knowledge from experience, ML software collects data to improve its accuracy.

Machine learning can already be seen in technology systems today, and most of us are completely unaware of it. ML is used in:

  • Spam filters
  • Search engine rankings
  • Speech recognition systems such as Siri and Alexa
  • Traffic jam projections
  • And to personalize content

Automation

Automation is described as making a hardware or software that is capable of doing things without human intervention. These systems work automatically based on explicit programming and rules. Its purpose is to allow humans to focus on more creative tasks that require a personal touch and to let machines perform the repetitive and monotonous tasks that take up to much time. This would permit a more efficient and effective business which would result in a more productive workforce.

One of the biggest industries to use automation is in manufacturing. Production companies practice automation with their automatic testing and control systems, mechanical labor, operating equipment, and computers. While automation and AI continue to grow as we learn more about them, their development is being designed to improve our societies businesses and industries by making them more efficient and effective.
